HTML basing

Basing is the process of creating the fundations (or the ... basing) for a website. In HTML basing we create the HTML file and style it using CSS 2 & 3.

Browser support

Browser support for all mayer players

  • Internet explorer is not the evil browser anymore. Now it's a wearthy player. We support IE7/8 and 9 (6 on demand)

  • Firefox is the second largest browser with a marketshare of 29%. We mainly use firefox during our working ours.

  • Safari is one of our favorite browsers since version 4. The support for HTML 5 is just great and put into good use by companys like google.

  • Chrome is getting bigger and with a marketshare of 4% it surpassed Opera. We believe Chrome will have a big part to play in the future.

  • Opera is probably the best browser but is not reconized as such. With only 2% marketshare it's still one of our favorites.

What about the other browsers?

alternatieve browsers Allthough we don't test in alternative browsers, we do have them installed on our Mac. If you need support for specific browser just let us know in the briefing.

Technology

Search Engine optimization

zoekmachine optimalisatieSEO sollutions are very complex but they all need a very good HTML fundation, it's essential for good results.

At regular intervals we hire SEO experts to analyse and optimize our source files for search engines.

CSS Sprites

css spritesA technique that requires some time to implement but has great value, including: ease of maintenance, faster loading website, no flicker in IE:hover and a smaller file size.

We mainly apply this technique to list icons, backgrounds and buttons.

Cufon Text Replacement

CSS offers many more features and effects for fonts. But until CSS3 is actually the norm we use Cufon as our text replacement technique of choice. Offcourse sIFR is als a possibility but we recommend Cufon.

ASP.NET support

asp.net logoIf you are an ASP.net developer (Web Forms) than we have you coverted. We take in mind all the specific issues typical the the technology like Webcontrols and other controls that generate HTML. Let us know in the briefing if you need ASP.net support.

CSS Objects

css objects logo

We develop our own CSS Framework called "CSS Objects". It allows us to reform our code infinitely. And it works, because each section af a site for example a simple button is thoroughly documented.

Objects are: Info:
Een mix van HTML en CSS For example, the CSS object "Split" is used to split content into columns. The framework contains both HTML and CSS code.
Independent None of the objects are bound to a page or other object, they are independent.
Extendable Every object can be extended with new functionality or code without the fear of breaking any code on other pages.
Reusable Objects can be reused over and over again. Making a new page is very easy and fast.

Why CSS Objects?

CSS Objects ensures robust HTML and CSS code that is understandable and very easy to use. Customers can add new pages very quickly and integrate them into a CMS or framework like Wordpress or CakePHP.

W3C validation & standards

HTML Validation

All pages are W3C valid, this makes them future-proof, easier to maintain and quicker to debug.

CSS Validation

Just like HTML validation, using the W3C tool, we make sure our CSS file is CSS 2.1/3 valid.

HTML 5

html 5 logoHTML 5 still has a long way to go, but our knowledge of the new standard is quite good to make sure that your site is HTML 5 ready. The W3C has developed tools to check the validation of html 5.

Semantic HTML code

With semantics we bring structure in HTML files, semantics is also an important criteria for search engine rankings.
How to recognize good semantic HTML, with CSS off:

With CSS turned off:

  1. Can you define parts of the site quickly?
  2. Is the order of the parts correct?
  3. Does the content have meaning?

1: Define parts 2: Order correct 3: Content has meaning
basing semantische code
To recognize semantic HTML: surft to a webpage, turn off CSS and apply the rules above.

Our code-wrting style

Encapsulation objects

We make extensive use of HTML comments to encapsulate larger HTML sections into smaller pieces of code. This makes our code very user friendly and easier to integrate in frameworks like CakePHP or ASP.net MVC.

Encapsulating divs that make up this 'roundedbox' object:

Using this technique, content and structure is clearly seperated. A better way to organize HTML code.

  • CSS declarations

CSS declaraties CSS declarations and attributes are written on the same line as the CSS selector. This reduces the file size, improves readability and makes the code clearer.

  • Filenames

Bestandsnamen We use the _ character to seperate words in file names. Sometimes we apply this convention to CSS classes.

  • Small caps

Kleine letters XHTML explains that tags and attributes should be in lower case. We go one step futher and apply this convention to everything (classes, files, comments, etc…)

  • No abbreviations

Geen afkortingen To improve the readability of class and filenames we avoid the use of abbreviations as much as possible.

  • The <hr /> tag

De hr tag This tag is used to semanticly seperate large portions of the site (header, footer). This creates an additional tool for search engines to understand a page.

  • Dynamic buttons

Dynamische buttons Buttons are made up of 1 image and are therefore dynamic in width. You can add new buttons very quickly.
